How to Make a 2D Paper Doll

Draw Your Own 2D Paper Doll

    • 1). With your #2 pencil, draw a figure on heavy card stock.

Try to use paper stock in the flesh color of your choice. Paper dolls themselves are usually dressed in plain undergarments, like shorts and an undershirt, because the fun of a paper doll is having lots of different outfits and looks. There is no need to draw hair right now. You will create different hair styles later so that you can change them as often as you like. Don't forget to draw a face.

    • 2). Place your tracing paper or lightweight paper on top of your paper doll and trace over it.

You will use this template to help create clothing, hair and accessories, so you won't be cutting this doll out. Be sure to use dark lines to trace around the doll. Keep it stored flat in a safe place so that you can make new things for your paper doll any time you want.

    • 3). Cut it out.

Very carefully, cut your doll out of the card stock. If you would like your doll to be sturdier, you can glue it onto an additional piece of card stock and cut it out again.

    • 4). Design clothing, hair and accessories.

Using the doll template we created in Step 2, place regular paper over it and draw all the things you want your paper doll to wear. You should be able to see your doll through the paper so that you can easily draw outfits in the correct size to fit. Once you are happy with your designs, draw on small tabs at the tops and on the sides of each item. You'll use those tabs to attach the items to your paper doll by bending them over the doll.

    • 5). Color and cut.

Color all your paper doll accessories as you like and then carefully cut each of them out. You're ready to dress your doll!

Use Ready Made Paper Doll Templates

    • 1). There are many Websites that offer free paper doll templates for personal use. You'll find a few of those in the resources section below.

    • 2). Once you've chosen the paper doll templates you like, print them onto card stock or heavy paper.

    • 3). Color your printed paper dolls and accessories and cut them out.
