How to Change Sidelights to Stained Glass

    Wood Frame

    • 1). Cut the wood spacer to size to install against the current window frame, if a spacer is required. A little space between the clear window pane and the stained glass allows air circulation to prevent moisture buildup.

    • 2). Measure and cut the wood molding to frame the stained glass sidelight and hold it in place against the window.

    • 3). Paint or stain the wood molding and allow it to dry completely.

    • 4). Clean both sides of the stained glass sidelight very thoroughly and make sure they are completely dry, especially the side that face the current window glass.

    • 5). Set the bottom of the stained glass panel into place against the wood spacer at the bottom of the window, and angle the panel into place against the frame provided by the spacer.

    • 6). Place a few pieces of masking tape on either side to keep the stained glass panel in place. Make sure it is enough to hold the panel in place. If it is a large panel, have someone help hold it in place until it is secured by the molding.

    • 7). Screw or nail the wood molding into place at the top of the stained glass sidelight, then remove the tape and fasten the sides and bottom molding into place.

    Caulking

    • 1). Clean both sides of the stained glass panel and the clear sidelight.

    • 2). Set the stained glass sidelight into place against the existing window.

    • 3). Place shims or small cardboard strips along the bottom of the stained glass panel to hold it in place. There should be about a 1/8-inch gap on all sides.

    • 4). Secure the stained glass sidelight in place with pieces of masking tape.

    • 5). Squeeze an even bead of silicone caulk around all sides of the stained glass sidelight and smooth it into place. Leave gaps where the shims or cardboard strips are located.

    • 6). String a piece of masking tape all the way across the stained glass sidelight and the frame on either side, and place a folded cardboard strip into the center to help hold it in place against the window. You may need to place one toward the top and another toward the bottom, if it is a tall window.

    • 7). Allow the silicone caulking to dry completely, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    • 8). Remove the shims or cardboard strips and all masking tape once the silicone caulking is dry. The gaps provide a place for air to circulate between the windows to help prevent moisture buildup.

    • 9). Measure, cut and install wood trim if desired.
