How to Make Your Own Small Couch

    • 1). Sand two wood pallets with 80-grit, and then 200-grit sandpaper. For best results, use a palm sander. Be sure to sand until all surfaces are very smooth, to avoid splinters later. Finish the pallets as desired. You may choose to give them a clear varnish coat, or paint them with two coats of semi-gloss paint.

    • 2). Set the pallets next to each other, forming a rectangle. Attach two large hinges across the place where the two pallets connect. One side of each hinge is attached, with wood screws and a drill, to one pallet, and the other side to the second pallet. This keeps the pallets from separating when someone is sitting on the couch.

    • 3). Cut 4-inch foam into two 22-inch squares using an electric knife. Cut a piece of quilt batting large enough to wrap around each square with 2 inches overlay. Wrap the squares in batting, like a present, and hand-stitch the batting closed to hold it in place. Both squares should be individually wrapped in batting.

    • 4). Cut four squares of fabric 23 inches by 23 inches. Cut eight strips of fabric 23 inches by 5 inches. The strips can be of the same or a contrasting fabric, but should be the same weight.

    • 5). Sew four strips together, with one-half-inch hems, making a long strip. Trim the hems to one-quarter inch. Pin one of the fabric squares to the top of edge of the strip. The strip will run along the sides of the square, with the seams at the corners. The wrong side of the fabric square and strip should both be showing. Leave a one-quarter-inch hem. Sew around this hem. Repeat with the other square, only leave one of the sides open so you can insert the pillow. Repeat with the other fabric squares and strips.

    • 6). Turn the pillowcase right side out. Insert the pillow into the pillowcase. Tuck the edges of the open side in and hand-sew closed. Repeat with the other case and pillow. Place the pillows on top of the pallet base. Set the pallet against a wall and add throw or floor pillows to the back of the couch.
