- 1). Measure your gauge in the yarn to determine the amount of stitches per inch. Use a measuring tape with the piece on a flat surface and count the number of stitches in one inch on the measuring tape.
- 2). Pick up and knit from the front of the sweater at the start of the lapel, around the neck and back down the other front of the sweater to the end of the lapel.
- 3). Cast on one inch worth of stitches on the straight needles and begin working in rib stitch. The rib stitch is worked by knitting one stitch then purling the next stitch. Repeat to the end of the row. For an even number of stitches, the second, and all following rows, is worked the same as the first row. For an odd number of stitches, the second, and all even numbered rows, is worked by purling the first stitch then knitting the second stitch and repeating to the end of the row.
- 4). Work the first row of the rib to the last stitch then work the last stitch together with the first stitch on the circular needle. On the second and all wrong side rows, work the next stitch on the circular needle together with the first stitch from your straight needles. On all right side rows, work the last stitch together with the next stitch on the circular needle. Work in rib for one inch, continuing to attach the knitting by knitting a stitch from the circular together with a stitch from the needle. Do this on every row to attach the collar as you knit.
- 5). Increase for the lapel. With the right side, make one stitch by slipping the needle in between the last stitch worked on the right hand needle and the next stitch on the left hand needle. Pull the stitch up with the needle and place on the needle. Knit into the back of the stitch. Work one wrong side row. Increase at the beginning of each right side row until the lapel is the desired width. Continue attaching the lapel to the sweater as in step four.
- 6). Continue working in rib, joining the lapel with the sweater as you go, until you reach the point on the opposite side of the sweater where your increases ended on the first side. Continue attaching the lapel to the knitting as in step four.
- 7). Decrease on the right side rows by knitting the first two stitches together. Work to the end of the row in rib and continue joining the lapel to the sweater. Work one wrong side row without decreases. Continue decreasing on every right side row until you are back to the original number of stitches. Continue attaching the sweater to the knitting as in step four.
- 8). Work one inch in rib, continuing to attach the lapel to the sweater as in step four. Bind off all stitches. Weave in the ends on the wrong side of the sweater, joining the cast on and bind off edges to the sweater.
