The History of the Garden Hoe

    Early History

    • The first known hoes where in the form of forked sticks and were used during the fifth millennium B.C. Historians have discovered cave paintings and writings indicating the early use of hoes.

    Material

    • The material used to construct garden hoes has altered over time. In the early days, garden hoes were built from animal parts such as shoulder blades and antlers. Over time, hoes have been constructed out of bone, copper, stone, bronze, iron, and metal.

    Usage

    • The garden hoe's function has not altered over time. From its early days, the hoe has been used to agitate soil around plants, create furrows and trenches, dig up and relocate soil, and chop and eliminate weeds. The hoe remains a multipurpose tool for gardeners to this day.
