- 1). Use a flashlight to inspect the underside of the bathtub spout to see if there is a set screw present. If you see a screw, even if it is inside a small hole, use an Allen wrench to remove the screw, then slide the spout off the water pipe.
- 2). Wrap a cloth around the spout if you do not see a set screw. Clamp a pipe wrench onto the spout. Turn the spout counterclockwise, using the wrench, until the spout comes off the water pipe.
- 3). Use the pipe wrench to turn the spout nipple counterclockwise to remove it from the water pipe. If the nipple does not come out enough that you can clamp the pipe wrench onto it, insert an internal pipe wrench into the nipple and clamp the pipe wrench onto the internal nipple.
- 4). Install a new spout in the reverse fashion you used to remove the old spout. Thread a plastic adapter piece onto the opening in the back of the spout if the water pipe is too small to thread onto the spout alone.
