- 1). Interior doors usually come with one of two types of locks. There is a push button and a twist knob lock. In some cases, you might have a lock that needs a key to open, but more often, a small pin-type piece of metal with a flat end, like a tiny flat-head screwdriver, will unlock them. Some locks, however, don't have a way to unlock from the outside. Push the button lock down to engage it, and twist the knob lock to do the same.
- 2). Slide the small metal bar with a flat end inside the small hole and move it around to locate the locking mechanism. This is done if the door was locked and then closed from the wrong side and no one is now in the room to unlock the door. Once you get the flat end situated in the lock, twist it to the left to unlock the door.
- 3). Use locks on interior doors that you don't want someone using. A good use of an interior lock is to keep children out of an unsafe room, or away from things you don't want them to see such as presents. Lock doors to home offices to keep paperwork from being messed up by those who shouldn't be in the offices, and lock animals out of certain areas inside the house.
