Sanding

Depending on the item you are painting, you may need to sand the surface of the item. This is especially important for glass and metal. Use fine-grit sandpaper and lightly sand the entire area. Make sure that you use fine-grit sandpaper because lower grit sandpapers can create large grooves and divots that can show up in the final paint application. You can also sandblast the item if you have the right tools.

Cleaning the Surface

Before you paint any surface, it is imperative to remove dirt, dust and grease. Mix warm water and dish detergent in a bucket. Use this mixture and a soft, clean cloth to clean the area that is going to be painted. Remove the sanding dust and dirt. You may need to really scrub the item if it has grease on it. Once the area is clean, let it air dry or wipe it with a lint-free cloth.

Taping and Priming

Krylon Make it Suede is a spray paint. As with any type of spray paint, you can get some overspray. Avoid this by taping off the areas of the item that you do not want painted. Apply painter's tape in place and press it down firmly to ensure that it is secure. Apply primer to the area by holding the can of primer about 10 to 12 inches from the item and applying two or three light coats of the primer. Let it dry per the manufacturer's directions.

Applying the Paint

The most important thing to do when applying Krylon Make it Suede paint is read the manufacturer's directions. Failure to read these directions can result in dissatisfaction with the paint job. Hold the Krylon Make it Suede paint about 10 to 12 inches from the item that is being painted. Spray a light application of the paint. Let the paint dry. Repeat until you get the suede look that you want.
