- 1). Open iTunes. Find the M4A song you want to convert to a ringtone, and right-click the track on a PC or hold down the control key and click the file on a Mac. Select "Get Info" from the new menu that appears.
- 2). Specify a start and stop time in the "Options" tab so that the track will play for only 30 seconds.
- 3). Go to the "iTunes" menu at the top of the screen and select "Preferences" to prompt a new window to open.
- 4). Click "Import Settings" in the "General" tab.
- 5). Select "AAC Encoder" in the "Import Using" drop-down menu. AAC (advanced audio coding) is a compressed audio file format that works well for ringtones.
- 6). Return to the M4A track you want to convert to a ringtone and highlight it.
- 7). Go to the "Advanced" menu at the top of the screen and select "Create AAC Version." The new AAC version of the track will appear in your music library.
- 8). Drag or paste the new track to your desktop and change the file's extension to M4R. Then connect your iPhone to your computer and drag the M4R file onto the iPhone icon.
- 1). Download and install an audio file converter. You can purchase or download a limited free trial of file converters at a variety of websites. Look at customiphoneringtone.com or download3000.com.
- 2). Click "Add File" or "Choose File" and browse your computer's files for the M4A file you want to convert. Click "OK."
- 3). Select "M4A" or "Apple Lossless Audio File (.m4a)" in the "Input Format" drop-down menu if the program does not automatically read the file's format.
- 4). Select "iPhone Ringtone (.m4r)" or "Nokia Ringtone (.nrt)" in the "Output Format" or "Save File As" drop-down menu.
- 5). Click "Generate," "Convert" or "OK" to begin the conversion.
