- 1). Take measurements for the front and back pieces of the shirt you are crocheting. Measure the length from the neck to the hips or desired bottom of the garment and the width across the front. Measure each shoulder from the neck to the end of the shoulder.
- 2). Subtract the width of both shoulders from the total width of the garment to determine the width of the neck hole. In general, the neck hole will be about one third of the total width of the garment.
- 3). Begin working the front piece of the garment at the bottom and crochet back and forth across the piece towards the top. Begin working the neckline when you reach the point where you want the neck hole to begin.
- 4). Work each side separately for the neck line. Crochet across one side to the point where the neck hole should be and stop. Turn the piece and continue working back and forth to the height of the shoulder. This will create a square neckline. For a V-neck garment, decrease along the edge that borders the neck hole with each row. Finish off the yarn when you reach the top of the piece.
- 5). Join the yarn to the garment on the opposite side of the neck hole and repeat the previous step to finish the other side of the neck hole in the same manner.
- 6). Repeat steps three through five for the back of the piece. In general, the neck hole is much shallower on the back of the garment than on the front.
- 7). Join the front and back pieces of the garment by sewing them together along the shoulders and along the sides, leaving openings for the arm holes and neck hole.
- 8). Finish the neck hole by joining the yarn with a slip stitch where the front and back pieces meet. Single crochet around the entire opening to give the neck hole a smooth, even finish. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch made and finish off.
