- 1). Find an external USB mouse and plug it into your computer. You'll need a reliable pointing device in order to download and install new drivers.
- 2). Navigate to your laptop manufacturer's website, and select "Support" or "Downloads." Find the specific page for your laptop's model. If the model name or number isn't on the lid or screen, check the bottom panel; often, you'll also find a service tag or serial number in order to navigate directly to the support page for your specific model.
- 3). Download the driver for the touchpad to your desktop on the support/download page for your laptop model. Make sure you select the correct software for your operating system (Windows XP, Vista, 7, all in 32bit or 64bit flavors). You can see your computer's essential information by clicking "Start," then right-clicking "My Computer" and selecting "Properties." There may also be secondary touchpad software; if there is, download this too.
- 4). Extract the files if necessary. The files may be in the .EXE, .MSI, .ZIP, or .RAR format. .EXE and .MSI are native Windows installers and need no modification. If you're given a .ZIP, right-click the icon, select "Extract", and go through the wizard until a file or folder is delivered to your desktop. If the file is a .RAR, install WinRAR (www.winRAR.com) and repeat the steps for the .ZIP file.
- 5). Double-click the downloaded .EXE or .MSI (this might be in a new folder if you had to extract it). Follow the install wizard. At the conclusion, it will ask you to reboot your computer. If the driver is all you downloaded, click "OK" or "OK, restart". If your laptop manufacturer provided secondary software, ignore this and install the software, then reboot.
- 6). Login to your machine and check that the touchpad is working properly. Adjust the sensitivity and buttons to your liking by clicking "Start," then "Control Panel." Double-click the "Mouse" icon, and check the settings available.
