Directions for Hand Braided Rugs

    Construction Preparation

    • According to a 1932 issue of Needlecraft Magazine, "The rags are cut or torn in strips an inch and a half in width--wider for thin goods...", but 2- or 3-inch wide strips of fabric provide a sturdier braid. Braid the strips together, joining the ends of the braided strips together with thread, and rolling them into a continuous ball. You will need to accumulate the yards of braid required for the size rug you desire. Twenty-three yards of braid equals approximately a 22-inch wide circle rug.

    Constructing the Rug

    • The coils of the rug are best achieved by working on a flat surface. Coil the braid into a 4-inch diameter circle to create sturdy center and sew through the layers. Rotate the coil as you work, sewing the braid alongside the braid next to it using a loop stitch. Continue to coil the braids in a flat circle or other shape desired until the rug reaches the desired size. No matter what shape you would like the rug to be, you must start with a center coil of braids sewn in that shape.

    Added Modern Conveniences

    • Sew the braid end to the underside of the rug. Add strips of non-slip rubberized drawer liner beneath the rug to cut down on rug slippage. Sew or glue the cut rubber strips into place. The advent of the glue gun makes attaching the rubber liner much easier than in years past when rug makers had to sew it on as the only resort. Some rug crafters take the time to fashion a solid colored braid out of coordinating solid fabric and "outline" the rug with this braid. This gives a finished appearance to the braided rug.
