Place different colored pony beads into paper cups or an empty egg carton. For young children, the beads should be large with large holes to make threading easier. Pony beads are available in plastic in many sizes and are very inexpensive at most hobby and art shops. - 2). Put a colorful place-mat made of felt where each child will be working. This will prevent the beads from rolling off the table and makes them easy to see.
- 3). Teach the children to thread the beads onto pre-cut pieces of string. For the younger children, it is best to place the first bead on the string with the end knotted before they begin. New shoe laces make excellent string for the larger beads.
- 4). Tie the end of the beaded string when there are five to seven inches of beads strung. You can attach a hook or ribbon to the end so the beaded creation can adorn the child's backpack . Hooks are available at the arts and crafts store for minimal cost.

Plan the beading project and make a complete list of the beads and items needed. There are many patterns and instructions available online or in beading books available at craft shops or at the public library. It is wise to draw a pattern before beginning. - 2). Set up the area for the beading project with all the needed items. Measure and cut the string or the elastic you will be using and separate the different colored beads into an egg carton or paper cups.
- 3). Working together on a beading project is the best way to keep interest strong. Having several young people working at the same table on their projects makes it fun. Beading at a birthday party with the keychain or necklace as a gift creates competitive interest as well.
- 4). Allow the youth to decide on the colors and style of the beading project and stay close by to assist when needed. Taking a photo of the completed work is an excellent means to foster and keep their interest in beading.
