- 1). Divide the fondant into two sections and set one aside. Add a small amount of brown food coloring to the remaining section and knead to mix in the color. Continue to add the coloring until the fondant reaches the brown color you want.
- 2). Roll the brown fondant into a single long strip that looks like a rope, about 3/4-inch thick. Do the same with the white fondant.
- 3). Twist the two ropes of fondant together.
- 4). Shape the twisted rope into a rectangle. Measure the first 8 inches of the fondant rope and fold the next 8 inches beside the first. Keep folding 8-inch sections next to the growing rectangle until all of the length is used. Press down on the rectangle to flatten the fondant and blend the white and brown together.
- 5). Roll out the fondant until it reaches the length and width of the cake. As you roll, the brown and white will blend together to create a wood-grain look.
- 6). Use the blunt end of the fondant ball tool, or a dull knife, to make light grain marks throughout the fondant slab.
- 7). Use a large fondant smoother, or rotary cutting tool, to cut the slab into sections for the wood flooring. Make both vertical and horizontal cuts, which allow you to assemble the strips in staggered fashion on the cake, similar to wood flooring strips. Let the sections dry for about 24 hours.
- 8). Spread a layer of brown butter cream icing over the top and sides of the cake.
- 9). Assemble the sections on top of the cake to complete the wood flooring cake. Cutting the fondant into individual strips makes it look more like wood plank flooring. Moistening the sides of the fondant will help the individual strips stick together on the cake. Spray a little bit of vegetable oil spray over the cake to give it a wood floor sheen.
