- Its diaphonous appearance makes organza a perfect material for fantastical projects. Distressing it only heightens the effect.organza background image by ennavanduinen from Fotolia.com
Organza is a silky sheer material, usually with a crinkled texture and translucent appearance. It can be made from real silk or a synthetic material such as rayon or nylon. You can buy organza pre-distressed, or distress it post-purchase by burning, fraying or stretching the material. Its delicate appearance should not deceive; it is a tough fabric perfect for many craft projects. - Silk flowers have long been a staple of interior design. Distressed organza is a particularly apt material for this craft as its frayed edges and irregular texture more closely resemble that of flower petals than other materials. Synthethic forms of organza may perform better here, as they tend to be a bit tougher and distress slightly better. You can find detailed instructions for creating these flowers in various places, including Calamity Kim's site, where she writes of the fabric petals, “I like to scrunch and wad them up in my sweaty little hands to create wrinkles and texture before I burn the edges with a candle or long lighter.”
- Ribbon sewn into various patterns and designs is a common and time-honored way to decorate skirts, jackets and other clothing items. Because of its flexible quality, you can make similar creations using thin strips of distressed oganza. Draw the desired pattern on a skirt or pillow using a disappearing ink pen, then lay the strips of organza on top following the pen lines. Sew the organza strips down the middle, allowing the edges to remain unturned and frayed. This gives the project a whispy airy quality specifically appropriate for natural designs and motifs. You can buy organza already in ribbon form from sites such as Bunny Zoes Crafts and distress it after purchase.
- Again the light, airy, perhaps even smoky quality of organza makes it an ideal medium for projects eliciting an other-worldly or magical feel. Wrapped around a regular stick or dowel and tied in a way that the ends are allowed to dangle, ribbons of organza seem to float right off the wand shaft, making it look lighter than air or enshrouded in some magical fog. This makes the perfect wand for a sorcerer, sorceress or fairy.
- Because of its thin, porous quality, distressed organza would make an ideal material for making sachets to freshen a room. The distressed quality can give these odor fighters a more classic, antique feel while allowing more aroma from the potpourri, lavender or other fragrant filling to come through. Detailed instructions for making sachets as well as suggestions for their usage appear at Martha Stewart's website.
