- Boxy stars is just one of the many quilts that you can make out of a jelly roll as it is made exclusively from 2 ½-inch-wide strips of fabric. The boxy star is a star pattern that is set within a square to give it a boxy look. Pull some of the bolder colors out of the jelly roll for the colors in the forefront, saving more neutral colors for the background. All of the quilt's seams are straight, making this an ideal pattern for beginning quilters.
- The hugs and kisses quilt uses 2 ½-inch-wide jelly roll pieces to create a quilt top covered in Xs and Os. This quilt requires the creation of three different units that you then sew together into the different X and O blocks. Along with the jelly roll colors, you may want to choose a very neutral color, such as white or cream, for the background fabric. A neutral tone will ensure that your kisses and hugs stand out. This quilt can be made by beginning and experienced quilters alike.
- The sister's choice quilt uses a jelly roll to make nine-patch blocks set in the center of a star. This is an easy to follow pattern, but it does feature some work on the bias of the fabric, which can be a little tricky for beginning quilters. The key to working on the bias is to let the sewing machine do the work of feeding the fabric through the stitching process. Do not push or pull the fabric pieces as you are sewing them to avoid sewing misshapen blocks.
- The crayon box quilt is the perfect quilt for jelly rolls with a wide variety of bold colors in them. When completed, this quilt looks like a brand new box of colorful crayons. It uses 2 ½-inch-wide rectangles and squares. To make, start with a center square and build up different strips all around the square until you have a 12-inch block. This is a very easy quilt for beginners and can be put together quickly with simple stitching.
