- 1). Log in to the computer as Administrator. Click on "Start," then on "Control panel," then on "System and security," then on "Administrative tools." Double-click "Computer management." Select "Storage" and "Disk management" on the left navigation pane. Disk Management will display the current state of the disk, with free regions and regions occupied by existing partitions.
- 2). Right-click on the partition where you want to create the filesystem, then select "Format." All data in the partition will be irreversibly lost after this step.
- 3). Select the type of filesystem you want to create on this partition, from the options available on the pull-down menu next to the "File System" heading. The options typically are NTFS and FAT32. Click "Next," then "Finish," then wait until Windows reports that the format operation has completed. At that point, the filesystem has been created on the partition, and the partition is ready to store user data.
