- 1). Open and secure you car's hood. Put on protective gloves and goggles. Remove the negative (-) battery cable first, using a wrench to loosen the cable clamp. It's important to remove the negative cable first, because it connects to the car's body; if your wrench accidentally touches the positive battery terminal and the car's body, you will short the battery, which could cause an explosion.
- 2). Remove the positive (+) battery cable using a wrench, and move both cables away from the battery.
- 3). Use a stiff wire brush to clean the battery terminals until they are completely free of corrosion. If they are heavily corroded, a solution of baking soda and water will help to remove the corrosion and clean the terminals. Dry the terminals and connections completely once you've removed the corrosion.
- 4). Use a wrench to reconnect the positive cable to the positive battery terminal. Use a soft brush to coat the cable connector and terminal with thick oil-based grease or petroleum jelly.
- 5). Use a wrench to reconnect the negative cable to the negative battery terminal. Again, use a soft brush to coat the cable connector and terminal with thick oil-based grease or petroleum jelly.
