- 1). Trace the wires from the light bar to the interior switch that controls the lights. The switch may be an aftermarket switch used only for the lights or the light bar may be wired into the ignition switch. Make sure the ignition is turned completely off (not in the auxillary position so the radio may be listened to without the engine running) and any additional control switch for the light bars is in the "Off" position as well before proceeding.
- 2). Trace the wire from the switch that leads to the grounding point. The wire is typically black but will always terminate to a connection on the frame or a metal bolt that passes through the frame.
- 3). Remove the negative ground wire from the car frame using a socket wrench to remove the bolt and the pull the wire free. Make sure to coil wire so the bare end cannot connect with any part of the frame.
- 4). Disconnect the other end of the wire from the switch by removing the retaining screw with a flat head screwdriver and pulling the wire out of the terminal.
- 5). Disconnect the power wire (this is typically red or white) from the battery or control box. Battery connections can be undone by using a wrench to loosen the lug and then pulling the wire free. Power wires are plugged into control boxes; squeeze the sides of the plug and pull the wire out.
- 6). Pull the negative wire and the power wire back to the light bars (through the firewall or other entrance point). Coil the wires so they do not get tangled during the rest of the removal process.
- 7). Put a Phillips head bit in a drill and test that the drill is set to "reverse." Locate the brackets on the lightbar that are holding it to the frame of the car and remove all the screws in the brackets using the drill. Pull the lightbar from underneath the car.
