How to Remove the Motor Head on a 1988 Toyota Pickup

    • 1). Open the engine compartment and prop it open with the rod. Check the engine to make sure it is completely cool before you begin. Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench. Open the drain valve on the bottom of the radiator and drain the engine coolant into the drain pan. Remove the air cleaner from the bracket using a wrench to loosen the retaining nuts. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the support and the carburetor throttle by unhooking it.

    • 2). Disconnect the fuel lines from the carburetor using a wrench. Plug the lines with fuel line plugs. Disconnect the choke cable from the carburetor. Remove the water hose bracket from the valve cover using a wrench to remove the bolts. Loosen the water hose clamps using a screwdriver and disconnect them from the water pump. Disconnect the heater control cable from the water valve. Disconnect the PCV valve from the valve cover.

    • 3). Label the vacuum lines on the distributor vacuum unit using the marker and masking tape. Disconnect the vacuum lines from the vacuum unit. Label the various lines on the vacuum switching valve with the marker and masking tape. Disconnect the vacuum lines from the switching unit. Label the vacuum lines on the carburetor and disconnect them. Disconnect the pipes from the choke stove using a wrench. Label the spark plug wires with the marker and tape.

    • 4). Pull the wires off the spark plugs by grasping the wires at the boot and pulling them off. Do not pull by the wire itself or you will damage it. Remove the spark plugs from the engine using a socket, ratchet and extension. Remove the bolts from the valve cover using a socket and ratchet. Lift the valve cover away from the cylinder head. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the cylinder head water outlet using a screwdriver to loosen the clamp.

    • 5). Remove the outlet elbow and thermostat using a socket and ratchet. Unfasten the downpipe clamp from the exhaust manifold using a wrench. Remove the manifold from the cylinder head using a socket and ratchet. Remove the mounting bolts from the valve rocker assembly using a socket and ratchet along with the oil delivery pipes. Remove the valve rocker assembly from the engine.

    • 6). Remove the timing gear from the camshaft using a wrench. Support the chain using a wire tie to attach it to something on the engine to keep it from falling down into the timing chain housing. Remove the camshaft bearing caps using a socket and ratchet. Remove the camshaft and bearing caps from the cylinder head. Loosen the head bolts using a hex socket, ratchet and short extension. Loosen the bolts in stages to avoid stressing the head.
