- 1). Sand the mirror with 800-grit wet dry sandpaper, keeping the part wet and clear of sanding residue. Dry and inspect the part frequently, and continue until the surface to be painted is completely sanded. The surface will be smooth, and slightly dull in appearance when complete.
- 2). Mask any areas, like the mirror glass, that are not to be painted with masking tape and paper. Some mirrors may require a two-tone scheme to match the factory appearance. This accomplished by painting the entire mirror with the darker color, then masking and painting the lighter color.
- 3). Wipe the entire surface with mineral spirits and a clean, lint free, cloth to remove any oily residue and fingerprints. Then spray one or two even coats of adhesion promoter over the surface to be painted and allow it to cure.
- 4). Prime the surface for paint as you normally would with two to three light even coats of primer. Allow the primer to dry, and then wet sand with 800-grit sandpaper to smooth and scuff the surface for paint.
- 5). Paint the surface with two to three coats of paint, and then two to three coats of clear. Follow the manufacturers direction concerning cure times and sanding schedules. This information is printed on the can of paint, and should be followed for best results.
