- 1). Put down a drop cloth to protect the area that you are working in.
- 2). Clean three wine crates or fruit crates thoroughly with soap and water and then allow them to dry thoroughly.
- 3). Sand the crates down, first with 300-grit sandpaper, and then 150-grit sandpaper. This removes any splinters or raw edges.
- 4). Wipe all the sawdust away with a clean cloth. At this point, you can choose to paint the crates with paint and a paintbrush if you wish, though raw wood also conveys a pleasant rustic feeling.
- 5). Lay one crate on its long side with the opening facing towards you.
- 6). Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the side of the crate that is facing up.
- 7). Lay another crate on top of the first, oriented in the same direction.
- 8). Clamp the two crates together using C-clamps and allow the glue to cure completely. The amount of time this takes will be indicated on the packaging of the wood glue.
- 9). Repeat steps 6 through 8 with the third wine crate. After the glue cures, the bookcase is ready to use.
