- 1). Take apart the old seat cushion by using the seam ripper to cut the seam threads, being careful not to tear the fabric. Use the marking pen to label the pieces (top or bottom) and which edge is the front and back. These pieces will serve as your pattern for the new cushion fabric.
- 2). Take the old fabric pieces to the fabric store when purchasing your new fabric, so that you can be sure you are purchasing enough. Consider using fabrics made specifically for outdoor furniture. Many of these fabrics have finishes that make them stain- and mildew-resistant, and easier to clean. Also purchase foam for the cushions, being sure to match the depth of the original cushion's foam.
- 3). Place the old fabric pieces on top of your new fabric, and trace the outline of the pieces with your marking pen. Cut out all fabric pieces, being sure to center any designs on the fabric. If you are using a striped fabric, be sure that the stripes are lined up correctly before cutting.
- 4). Cut the cushion foam to match the size of the existing cushion foam. You may find it useful to use a serrated knife or electric carving knife to cut the foam.
- 5). Sew the fabric pieces together, using the old cushion as an example. Sew with upholstery thread if using thicker fabrics, for increased strength. Leave one side of the cushion cover unsewn, so that the foam can be inserted.
- 6). Turn the cushion cover right side out and insert the cushion foam. Pin the remaining open edges together and sew them together by hand.
- 7). Cut the ribbon or twill tape into four 12-inch lengths, and sew two pieces to each back corner. These ribbons will tie to the back vertical poles of the chair, keeping the cushion in place. If desired, and depending on the design of the chair, additional ties can be attached for the front legs.
