How to Install a Caravan Water Pump

    • 1). Pull the hood release located under the dash. Prop the hood open so it doesn't fall on you while you're working on the engine. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw that holds the negative battery cable in place. Disconnect the battery cable, and push it to the side.

    • 2). Put wheel blocks directly behind the rear tires. Lift up the front of the van with the jack, and place jack stands under the front end's axle for added support. Place a third jack stand under the engine to help support the engine.

    • 3). Place the drain pan under the radiator. Remove the radiator cap by turning it slowly to release any pressure. Loosen the drain plug beneath the radiator and allow the coolant to drain.

    • 4). Remove the parts blocking your path to the water pump. Start with the right inner splash guard. Then, remove the accessory drive belt, right motor mount and bracket.

    • 5). Remove the timing belt covers. Use a grease pencil to mark the timing belt. Make a small mark indicating the position of each pulley where it touches the timing belt. This makes it easier to reinstall. Then, remove the timing belt.

    • 6). Remove the access parts. Take off the idler pulley. Then remove the camshaft sprocket and alternator. You will now have access to the water pump.

    • 7). Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the water pump in place. Lift out the old pump. Use a clean cloth to wipe away any grease in the area the water pump sits.

    • 8). Install new water pump. Add gasket sealant to the O ring, and attach it to the new water pump. Hold the water pump and the O ring in place and slip the bolts in the holes. Tighten the bolts in a star pattern.

    • 9). Replace parts the parts you removed in reverse order. Start with the alternator. Then, reinstall the camshaft sprocket, idler pulley, timing belt, timing belt cover, right motor mount and bracket, accessory drive belt and the right inner splash guard.

    • 10

Tighten the radiator drain plug, and remove the drain pan. Fill the radiator with 50 percent antifreeze and 50 percent water. Replace the cap to the radiator.

    • 11

Remove the jack stands, lower the vehicle and remove the wheel blocks. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

    • 12

Start the vehicle and let it warm up. Once the van is warm, check the water pump and all hoses for any leaks.
