- 1). Check with local government agencies to determine if there are any state laws regarding allowable colors for flammable liquid tanks. Skip this step if your tank is located indoors.
- 2). Wash the aboveground flammable liquid tank with a degreaser, using steel wool or a coarse brush. Rinse the tank, using wet rags or a water hose. Let your tank dry for at least three hours.
- 3). Coat the metallic flammable liquid tank with metal-etching primer, using a roller. Roll vertically, moving from the left side of the tank to the right. Touch-up the tank, using a nylon paintbrush. Let the tank dry for two hours.
- 4). Wash your painting tools in a bathtub, sink or under a hose.
- 5). Paint the aboveground flammable liquid tank as you primed it. Use an acrylic latex paint or acrylic enamel.
