- 1). Get rid of the gloss. Sponge a mixture of lye and water or ammonia and water onto the surface of the piece of furniture to create a rougher texture for paint to hold onto if the piece is varnished.
- 2). Wash the surface of the piece of furniture with a sponge and a mixture of a mild soap, such as dishwashing detergent, and water. Rinse the surface and let it dry completely overnight. You do not want to trap any moisture under the surface of the paint.
- 3). Spray or brush a single coat of tinted primer in a color a couple of shades lighter than your intended color onto the surface of the furniture. Let it dry.
- 4). Apply a coat or two of paint to the surface of the piece using the same method you used with the primer. Let it dry.
