- 1). Sand the wood chairs with 220-grit sandpaper. Sandpaper roughs up glossy, varnished wood finishes for easier painting.
- 2). Wipe away sandpaper dust with a damp rag.
- 3). Cover cushions or accent details with painter's tape and plastic sheeting. Protect any part of the furniture that you don't want painted.
- 4). Apply stain-blocking primer to the finished chair, using a synthetic-bristle paintbrush. Many finished wooden surfaces are stained for deeper, richer wood tones. These stains bleed through primer and paint if you don't use a stain-blocking primer. Wait for the primer to dry.
- 5). Paint the wooden chair, using oil-base paint and a foam brush. Oil-base glossy paints are more typical of furniture pieces, but you may also use matte finishes if you prefer.
- 6). Paint a second coat if needed after the first coat dries.
- 7). Remove the painter's tape after the paint has dried for 24 hours.
