Macrame Chair Directions

    • 1). Choose a color for the cord. Use the tape measure to measure the chair frame. Measure the distance from the top to the bottom of the back of the frame. Measure the distance from the back to the front of the seat of the frame. Add the back measurement to the seat measurement to get the total length and multiply that number by 8 . Cut 22 cords to that length. These will be referred to as the length cords. Multiply the seat measurement by 8 and cut eight cords to that length. These will be referred to as the seat cords. Dip all of the ends into wax or glue and allow them to dry completely before continuing. This will prevent them from fraying.

    • 2). Use the larks head knot to attach all of the length cords to the top of the chair frame. These will be folded in half so you will end up with 44 cords attached across the top of the frame.

    • 3). Tie two square knots in each group of four cords as you work across from left to right. Each knot will have two filler cords and two working cords. Tighten all of them as much as possible.

    • 4). Tie two alternating square knots in each group of four cords as you work across from left to right, leaving the two cords on each end unused. Again, use groups of four cords having two filler cords and two working cords. This will be the case for all square knots throughout.

    • 5). Repeat Step 4 down the length of the back of the chair. Stop when you are about 3/4 inch away from the bar at the bottom.

    • 6). Attach each cord to the bottom bar using a double half hitch. Pull them as tightly as you can before securing.

    • 7). Use reverse larks head knots to attach the seat cords to the bottom bar on the outsides of the cords you attached in Step 6. There should be four cords on each side.

    • 8). Repeat Step 4 over the length of the seat of the chair. Stop when you are about 3/4 inch away from the bar at the front of the seat.

    • 9). Attach each cord to the front bar using a double half hitch. Pull them as tightly as you can before securing.

    • 10

Turn over the chair and take one cord and move it across the ends horizontally for both the seat and the back. Attach all of them to that cord using a double half hitch. Tie tight barrel knots in each of the cords so they rest behind the frame. Trim the cords and apply glue to the knots. Allow them to dry thoroughly before using.
