- 1). Lay plastic moisture barrier over the subfloor surface. Cut to fit with a utility knife.
- 2). Lay your first course of Ikea floorboards along the wall where you want to start, snapping them together end to end by their tongue-and-groove fittings. Put plastic spacers between the wall and the Ikea boards, to create a thin space that will allow the floor to expand with climate changes. Cut the last board with a miter saw to fit at the end.
- 3). Install the other courses in the same manner, connecting the boards by their long ends. Install them in a staggered arrangement, making sure the ends of the boards don't line up as you lay them. Use the miter saw to cut the last board of each course.
- 4). Work your way across the floor course by course. Cut the last course of flooring lengthwise, to fit against the wall, leaving a 1/4-inch space.
- 5). Measure, cut and install floor trim around the perimeter of the floor, using your miter saw and trim nail gun. Shoot the nails through the trim and the walls, not the floor. The trim will cover the gaps and trap the edges of the floor in place.
