- Quill gearbox assemblies are common in cars and airplanes with manual transmissions. This is because quill assemblies can use more than one gear ratio, allowing a vehicle to switch between low gears for low speeds and high gears for high speeds. These assemblies also are used commonly for compressors in appliances, such as refrigerators.
- The diameter of quills in gearbox assemblies is relatively small, allowing other parts of the gearbox to be correspondingly smaller. The smaller shafts also naturally weigh less, bringing down the overall weight of the gearbox and reducing vibration.
- Quill gearbox assemblies are used widely in airplanes due to their relatively light weight and corresponding lack of vibration. Airplanes must be constructed sturdily, while being made of durable, dependable materials, and quill gearbox assemblies are ideal for this use.
