- 1). Download the Windows Vista-compatible driver for your operating system (see Resources). Save the file to your desktop or to your Downloads folder.
- 2). Double-click the driver installation file, and click "Extract All Files." Make a note of the directory in which the files will be extracted.
- 3). Click "Start." Type "printers" in the Search text field. Click "Printers."
- 4). Click "Add Printer" in the menu bar of the Printers window. Click "Add a Local Printer," then "Next."
- 5). Click "Use an Existing Port," then "Next."
- 6). Click the "Have Disk" button, then click "Browse" in the Install From Disk dialog box. Navigate to the directory where you extracted the driver files. Double-click the .INF file present in the directory.
- 7). Click "OK," and allow Windows Vista to install the printer. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
- 8). Right-click on the HP LaserJet 1012 printer. Click on "Properties." Click on the "Print Test Page" button in the lower-right corner of the printer Properties box.
- 9). Restart your computer, and attempt to print another test page if the first page will not print.
- 1). Examine the three status lights on the operator panel on the right side of the printer.
- 2). Turn off and unplug the printer for 30 minutes if all three lights are illuminated and not blinking.
- 3). Reduce the size of the file you are sending to the printer if the top light is blinking and the lower light is illuminated.
- 4). Look for and remove jammed paper, load additional paper or close the printer cartridge door completely if the top light is blinking.
- 5). Attempt to print another test page if the printer shows a solid middle status light.
