How to: Christmas Applique Embroidery

  • 1). Find an image of a Christmas stocking. Look for a picture with a clear outline of the stocking's shape. Enlarge the image to around 7 inches tall and 5 inches wide. Lay a piece of wax paper on top of the image and trace the stocking outline.

  • 2). Cut the stocking outline from the wax paper. Transfer the stocking shape onto the copy paper. Cut the stocking outline from the copy paper. Iron the corduroy fabric with the front facing down. Lay the fabric on a flat surface, again, with the front facing down. Apply glue to one side of the paper stocking.

  • 3). Center the paper stocking onto the back of the corduroy fabric. Carefully press the paper stocking to the fabric back with the glued side facing down. Use the ruler's straightedge to gently work out any air bubbles in the paper.

  • 4). Cut the stocking from the fabric, leave 1/4 inch of fabric sticking out around the edge of the paper. Use the applique' scissors to make small vertical cuts, every 1/4 inch, along the fabric edging. The tip of your scissors should face the paper stocking as you cut. Make diagonal cuts at each corner. Don't cut all the way to the paper. Leave a small pinch of uncut fabric next to the paper. If correct, you should see a series of tabs framing the paper stocking.

  • 5). Lay the fabric on a flat surface with the front side facing down. Apply glue to the top of one of the tabs. Fold the tab over, onto the paper, and pinch the two together between your thumb and forefinger. Hold for a few seconds. Move on to the next tab and continue until you have worked your way around the entire stocking. Iron your paper and fabric stocking on a very low setting with a towel between the stocking fabric and iron.

  • 6). Pin the corduroy stocking, with the paper side facing down, to the top center of the base fabric. Thread the needle and knot the thread's end. Push the needle, from the bottom of the base fabric, up through the base fabric, paper and corduroy. Bring the needle out on the fold on the corduroy's edge. Push the needle into the base fabric, just underneath the stocking's edge, about a 1/4 inch away from where you started. Continue in this manner all the way around the stocking. Knot the thread's end on the underside of the base fabric.

  • 7). Lay the fabric, with the applique side facing down, onto a flat surface. Use the applique scissors to cut an "X," in the center, on the back of the base fabric. Make the cut about 2 inches tall. Don't cut the corduroy fabric. Submerge the fabric into a bowl of cold water and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Take the fabric from the bowl and wring out the excess water. Pull the paper out of the opening in the back. Allow the fabric to dry and iron with the applique facing down.
