How to Print Pictures on Fabric for Quilts

    • 1). Open each image in your photo editing software program. Scan photographs into your computer first, if necessary.

    • 2). Crop each photo with your photo software. Crop the photos to bring attention to the subject of the photograph and to remove extraneous people or objects from the photo. Follow the software program instructions, and use the photo editing tools to fade the background, adjust brightness or colors, and otherwise enhance the image.

    • 3). Resize the photograph to your preferred size. Use the photo editor to resize the photograph, to add a border, text or other embellishment, if desired. Make sure the size of the finished image will fit within the printing borders, and adjust if necessary.

    • 4). Click on "File" and choose "Save As." Name the photo, choose a location to save it on your hard drive, and click "Save."

    • 5). Run a test print on plain paper to ensure that the photo is positioned properly and has the desired appearance. Make adjustments, as needed. Alternatively, you can run the test on a fabric sheet but paper is much less expensive.

    • 6). Trim any stray or lose threads from the edges of your printable fabric sheet with scissors. Place the printable fabric sheet into your printer tray with the fabric side positioned as the print side.

    • 7). Go into your printer's Printer Properties file and choose the correct orientation for your image, if necessary. Click on the "Advanced" tab and set the print quality to "Best" or "Fine." Click "Ok" and then click "Print."

    • 8). Check your printed fabric image. Make adjustments and re-print, if necessary.

    • 9). Let the ink dry thoroughly and carefully peel away the paper backing. Rinse and dry flat, or otherwise finish your printed image, as directed by the fabric sheet manufacturer.

    • 10

Trim away excess fabric and sew the printed fabric images into your quilt, as desired.
