- 1). Drive your vehicle to a local A/C repair center and ask them to remove the Freon from the A/C system. It is illegal to release Freon into the atmosphere, so you should have this work performed by a licensed professional.
- 2). Drive your vehicle home and open the hood. Locate the battery and loosen the bolt on the negative terminal clamp with a wrench. Lift the negative cable off the battery.
- 3). Enter your vehicle and locate the screws securing the glove compartment and lower dash panels. Remove the screws with the Phillips screwdriver and lift the panels away from the vehicle. Be careful not to damage the panels.
- 4). Use a socket wrench to loosen the bolt holding the A/C compressor belt tensioner. This will loosen the compressor belt. Remove the compressor belt. Then, remove the electrical connector from the back of the compressor to disconnect it from the wiring harness.
- 5). Turn the refrigerant line counterclockwise and remove it from the compressor. You must have the Freon removed from the system before attempting this step as disconnecting the line on a pressurized system can cause serious injury.
- 6). Remove the bolts securing the compressor with a socket wrench. Lift the compressor from the A/C assembly. Place the new compressor in place of the old one and secure in place with the mounting bolts. Reattach the refrigerant line to the compressor and turn in a clockwise direction to reconnect the line. Reconnect the electrical connector to the back of the compressor.
- 7). Feed the compressor belt back onto the tensioner and tighten the tensioner bolt to secure the belt in place. Reattach the lower dash panels by lifting them on to the dash and fastening in place with the screws. Reconnect the negative battery cable and secure by tightening the terminal bolt with a wrench.
- 8). Drive your vehicle back to the repair center and have your A/C system refilled with Freon.
