- The more you use your Windows XP computer, the more likely you are to build up clutter that bogs down your computer's performance, hindering its speed and overall efficiency. Using a number of clean-up tools--many of which are already included with Windows XP--you can bring your PC back to speed.
- One of the easiest ways to clear up excess data on your hard disk is by using the Disk Cleanup tool included with all versions of Windows XP. The Disk Cleanup tool eliminates unnecessary temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin and allows you to save disk space in a number of other ways. Access the Disk Cleanup tool by navigating to the Start menu, clicking "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and clicking "Disk Cleanup."
- Windows XP Disk Defragmenter organizes the files on your hard drive to optimize its performance, which makes it easier for Windows to locate information on your computer. Access the Disk Defragmenter in the "System Tools" folder of the Windows Start menu (the same folder containing the Disk Cleanup tool).
- Use the Malicious Software Removal Tool, a free tool for Windows owners to scan their PC for malicious programs that may be hiding on their hard disk. You can download the Malicious Software Removal Tool directly from Microsoft (see Resources).
