- 1). Measure the diameter of the shoe mount, using a tape measure. For example, the shoe mount might have a half-inch diameter.
- 2). Make the shoe mount slot. Cut a one-16th-inch aluminum sheet to 1-by-1-inch dimensions, using a jeweler’s saw. Drill a half-inch hole in the center of the shoe mount slot, using a power drill and half-inch drill bit. Insert a half-inch bolt through the shoe mount slot.
- 3). Make the shoe mount handle. Cut a one-eighth-inch metal bar to a 9-inch-length, using a jeweler’s saw. Drill a half-inch hole near the end of the bar, using a power drill and half-inch drill bit. Position the hole one inch from the end of the bar.
- 4). Place four inches of the bar into the vice grip. Hammer the exposed end of the bar downward until it bends. The bent portion of the bar should be parallel with the other half of the bar, making a sideways “U” shape.
- 5). Smooth the surfaces and edges of the bar, using a metal file.
- 6). Insert a half-inch bolt through the bottom of the hole in the handle. The shoe mount slot faces downward. Place a half-inch washer over the top of the hole in the handle and the bolt. Place a half-inch nut over washer and bolt. Tighten the nut with an adjustable wrench.
- 7). Spray the surfaces of the shoe mount handle with three coats of paint primer. Let each coat of the primer dry for one hour. Spray the shoe mount handle with three coats of spray paint. Let each coat dry for two hours.
- 8). Slide the slot into the shoe mount. The shoe mount handle rests over the top of the camcorder or camera.
