How to Configure a Vista Recovery Drive

    • 1). Click on the Windows Vista Start menu and select "All Programs." In the "Accessories" folder, click "System Tools" and choose "Backup Status and Configuration."

    • 2). Click the "Change Backup Settings" button, then click "Continue" to allow the selection. You need administrative permission to perform this action.

    • 3). Select the drive you wish to use as a recovery drive from the drop-down list. If you wish to use an external drive, connect it now, then click "Refresh" to view it in the list. If the drive is connected to another computer on your local network, click the "On a Network" radio button and select the drive from that list instead.

    • 4). Check the boxes corresponding to the information you wish to include on your recovery drive. Highlight an option and read its description in the "Category details" section to see which specific files will be included. Click "Next" when finished.

    • 5). Use the drop-down menus to choose how often your computer will update the recovery drive. The update will only occur if the recovery drive is connected at the scheduled time. Vista will also make an initial backup immediately. Click "Save settings and start backup" to finish the configuration process. If you want to use the existing recovery drive and turn off automatic backup, do so from the "Backup Status and Configuration" window.

    • 6). Use your recovery drive by connecting it to your computer after a system failure or loss of data and returning to the "Backup Status and Configuration" window.

    • 7). Click the "Restore Files" button in the left frame and then select the "Restore your files from a backup made on this computer" option.

    • 8). Click the "Files from the latest backup" or "Files from an older backup" radio button, depending on which portion of the recovery drive you wish to use, and click "Next" to begin the recovery process.
