How to Replace Window Sunscreens

    • 1). Remove the window screen and frame from the outside of the window. Use a drill to remove any screws holding the frame in place. Place the screws in a safe place.

    • 2). Measure the size of your frame. If you have more than one window to measure, keep track of all of them using a measuring worksheet that lists the various windows and their sizes.

    • 3). Use heavy-duty scissors to cut your new screen material 1 inch larger than the screen frame on all sides.

    • 4). Remove the spline -- or rubber cord -- that is holding the current screen in place on the window frame. Find the end of the spline and use a putty knife to pull it from the frame. Gently use your hands to pull the spline out from all sides of the frame. Pull out the old screen.

    • 5). Lay the new screen on top of the window frame. Starting in one of the bottom corners, use a spline roller to roll the spline over the new screen and into the spline groove to adhere it to the frame. As you roll, be sure that your screen stays as flat and tight as possible without ripping.

    • 6). Reinstall your window frame back onto the window sill using your drill and the screws you removed when you took it off.
