How to Clean Car Rust

    • 1). Rub the rusty area with 1,200-grit sandpaper to remove any loose pieces of rust.

    • 2). Apply the rust converter with an application brush to the rusted area. You may or may not need to shake the bottle of rust converter depending on the brand you buy. But, application of the converter should be thorough. Cover all areas. Don't be afraid to apply the converter liberally. In this case, too much is better than not enough.

    • 3). Clean up any areas where you "overapplied" the converter (such as painted surfaces that are not rusty).

    • 4). Wait 30 minutes or until the rust converter has turned the rust to a black, paintable primer. Check the formerly rusted area for any spots you might have missed and repeat steps 1 through 3 for any areas that are still rusty.
