My Windows XP Is Running Very Slow

    Run Microsoft Security Essentials XP

    • 1). Install Microsoft Security Essentials XP, version 1.0.1.196.3.0. Open the setup file. Click "Next" at the onscreen prompts. Read the license agreement and agree to the terms. Click "Finish" at the last prompt.

    • 2). Double-click "My Computer" on the desktop.

    • 3). Right-click the "C" drive or the letter corresponding to your hard drive.

    • 4). Click "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials..." and select the repair option when the scan is complete.

    Run Disk Defragmenter

    • 1). Double-click "My Computer" on the desktop.

    • 2). Right-click the letter of the hard drive. Select "Properties" and click "Tool."

    • 3). Select "Defragment Now." Click the "Defragment Now" button to begin the defragmentation of your hard drive. This tool consolidates fragmented files, increasing access speed to files.

    Disconnect Network Drives

    • 1). Double-click "My Computer" on the desktop.

    • 2). Click "Tools" on the menu bar and click "Disconnect Network Drive."

    • 3). Highlight the network drives that you do not use. Click "OK."
