Amount of Fabric Needed for Curtains

    Measuring for Full-Window Curtain Panels

Before any fabric is chosen for curtain panels, measuring the window is crucial. Do not use a cloth measuring tape when determining the size of the windows because it is not as accurate as a steel measuring tape. Measure the length of the window by placing the measuring tape at the top of the window's molding and pulling it down to where the bottom of the panel will rest. If the curtain rods are already installed, the measuring tape can also be placed on the rod and pulled downward. Place the measuring tape on the outside of the left window molding, and pull it across to the opposite window molding to measure the width. Measure twice to make sure the measurements are accurate.

    Estimating Yardage for Curtain Panels

    • The yardage of fabric needed for the curtain panel can be calculated quickly once the measurements are taken. Add three to six inches to the length of the window, which will be for the seam allowance. Double or triple the width to get the proper amount of fabric for the curtain, allowing the panel to billow and hang properly. The amount of additional fabric needed on the width will depend on the type of fabric being used and the fullness of the finished panel. Multiply the width of the window by the number of curtain panels so the appropriate amount of fabric can be purchased.

    Swags

    • Swags essentially create a more open look for a window and hang only along the top of the window. The amount of fabric needed for a swag is determined in a similar fashion to a traditional curtain panel. Measure the width of the window by starting at the left molding, and pulling the measuring tape across to the opposite side. Measure the drop of the swag or where the swag will end in the middle of the window. Place the tape measure at the top of the window molding in the middle, and pull down to where the swag will be at its lowest point. The finished length will be the width plus 12 inches plus two times the length of the window.

    Cafe or Tiered Curtains

    • Cafe or tiered curtains can usually be found in a kitchen or bathroom. These window treatments have two curtains that cover the window. Measure the width of the window as with a traditional curtain. Measure the length starting at the top of the window and ending in the middle of the window. Start measuring for the bottom of the tiered curtain by placing the tape measure in the middle of the window and ending on the windowsill. Add two to three inches to the width and length to allow for a seam.
