Auto DVD Installation

    • 1). Choose the type of DVD player you want. The two main choices are a player with its own screen that either attaches to the roof or inside a seat headrest or one that connects to a TV screen already installed in the car. You can, however, use something as simple as a standard portable DVD player.

    • 2). Find a spot to mount the portable DVD player. Many stores sell a soft case with straps that you can use to attach to a seat headrest. You could also mount it onto the dashboard in front of the passenger seat. Use adhesive strips to fasten the bottom of the player to the dash.

    • 3). Connect an external DVD player to a TV screen in the car. See what type of cable connection can be made; you may need to use RCA composite cables, but component cables are recommended wherever possible. Storing the player under a seat may work best or you can use the glove compartment.

    • 4). Install a player/screen combo into a front seat headrest. Cut a hole into the back of the headrest. This type of player should come with a frame that encases the player. Fix this frame into the hole with contact cement.

    • 5). Mount the player onto the car roof. This involves drillinh screws into the ceiling. If there isn't a metal sheet between the upholstery and the headliner, you must install a sheet of plastic or wood in which to drill the screws. This installation is best left to a professional.

    • 6). Wire the DVD player to a power source, especially if it doesn't have its own battery. Many can use adapters that plug into the cigarette lighter. Others must be connected directly to the vehicle's electrical system, possibly through the steering column.

    • 7). Include an audio output with the player. Speakers will require you to find a secure stationary location within the vehicle. Your best option is a set of headphones that connect to the player's audio output.
