- 1). Open the hood and remove the negative cable from the battery terminal. Place the cable so that is can't come in contact with any metal parts.
- 2). Cut the coat hanger into two 8 inch pieces and bend them into a "U" shape. Locate the four locking pin holes on the front of the stereo. Adjust the wire pieces to fit into the holes, vertically on each side.
- 3). Insert the hangers into the holes and apply pressure towards the outside of the stereo. This disengages the clips holding the head unit in the dash. Pull the radio out of the Mercury Cougar dash and disconnect the wires from the back of the stereo.
- 4). Connect the wiring harness adaptor to the original harness and let the wires hang from the front of the dash. Slide the new stereo into the Chrysler radio mounting kit, which is a thin metal cover and secure it per the manufacturer's instructions. Most adaptors have screws to hold the stereo in place, however some have clips, which engage automatically.
- 5). Attach the wiring harness adaptor and antenna wire to the back of the new head unit and slide the entire assembly into the dash until you hear the clips click into place.
- 6). Reconnect the negative battery cable and turn the radio on. Test the speakers and stereo controls to ensure they are working properly.
