    Painting the Field

    • 1). Squeeze yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, crimson, black, white, cadmium yellow and burnt umber into individual sections of your palette. Dip your brush into yellow ocher.

    • 2). Paint a slightly curving line horizontally across the middle of your canvas. Clean your brush. Combine three parts yellow ocher with one part ultramarine blue and one part burnt umber. Dip your brush in this new mixture. Paint a line 2 to 3 inches above the previous line. Fill in the space between the lines with this brown color. Clean your brush.

    • 3). Combine three parts ultramarine blue, one part black and one part white on your palette. Dip brush into mixture. In the bottom section of your canvas, paint a large, flat-topped rock in the upper right middle. Mix two parts ultramarine blue with one part black to use for shadow on the left side and bottom of the rock. To add highlights to the top and right side of the rock, add two parts white to your original color and highlight as desired. Clean your brush.

    • 4). Mix two parts burnt umber with one part ultramarine blue. Dip brush in mixture. On the left side of the rock, paint a tree trunk that is approximately 5 inches high. Paint upward-reaching branches that grow increasingly vertical and also shorter as they reach the top. The branches of the tree should create a a circular shape that is pointed on top. Fill in the trunk with the same color. Clean your brush.

    • 7). Dip your brush in yellow ocher. Using the same, upward-reaching strokes, apply the ocher on top of the darker grass to create depth and texture in the grasses. Allow some of the blades to reach up beyond the upper line of the bottom section so that they are highlighted against the upper, dark brown section of the canvas. Add cadmium yellow and white to the mixture and apply this new hue for highlights among the grasses. Clean your brush.

    • 8). Dip your brush in ultramarine blue. Apply color to negative spaces within the field grass to create the illusion of shadows and holes. Clean your brush.

    • 9). Mix two parts ultramarine blue and two parts white. Apply this color to the upper section of the canvas. This will be the sky. Clean your brush.
