- 1). Cut two pieces of boxing the same width as the rest of the cushion boxing. Cut the length of the zipper boxing equal to the width of the cushion plus 8 inches. This will allow the zipper to wrap around the sides of the cushion 3 inches on each side.
- 2). Fold each piece of boxing length-wise, wrong sides together and press them in place.
- 3). Place a narrow presser foot, or zipper foot, on your sewing machine. If you're using a zipper foot, adjust the foot so the zipper will lay to the right of the needle.
- 4). Position one folded edge of the boxing strip along the center top of the zipper, the bulk of the strip to the left of the needle, and the zipper teeth and right-hand tape of the zipper to the right of the needle. Sew close to the left side of the zipper teeth, from the top of the strip to the bottom. This creates a flap over the left side of the zipper.
- 5). Turn the strip 180 degrees. The just-sewn box strip should now be to the right of the needle.
- 6). Position the remaining folded box strip on the zipper, snug the folded edge up to the first box strip's folded edge, match the top edges and stitch close to the zipper.
- 7). Join the bottom of the zipper boxing to the cushion boxing with a 1-inch seam. Back-tack across the bottom of the zipper for security. Fold the seam allowance away from the zipper and stitch across the outside edges of the boxing, 1/4-inch from the edges, to secure it in place.
- 8). Cut one piece of 1/2-inch twill tape as long as the boxing strip is wide. Lay this tape along the top end of the zipper boxing strip wrong-side, from one edge of the boxing to the other. Move the zipper pull away from the tape and stitch the tape to the boxing strip close to each edge of the tape. This keeps the zipper from coming off the end of the tape.
- 9). Sew the boxing onto the cushion, sewing the remaining seam to connect the cushion boxing and zipper boxing last to ensure a proper fit. Lay the seam allowance away from the zipper and stitch it in place.
