The Best Way to Clean Grout

    • 1). Wet the surface of the grout and surrounding tiles. Allow the excess water to drain off for a few minutes so the grout is damp, but not soaked.

    • 2). Mix a paste of equal parts polishing cleanser and liquid bleach to create a grout-cleaning poultice. If your tile grout is darker than beige, add just 1 teaspoon bleach and 1/4 cup water to 1/4 cup polishing cleanser to make the paste. Stir 1 tablespoon baking soda into either mixture to boost the cleaning power.

Apply the poultice to damp grout with an old toothbrush, making sure to completely cover the grout. Allow the poultice to dry on the grout for a few hours. As the paste dries, it draws out stain material and also kills mold and mildew spores.

    • 4). Spray the surface of the grout with a bottle of water to dampen the poultice. Scrub the grout with the toothbrush to loosen and remove the poultice. Rinse the grout thoroughly with plain water.

    • 5). Repeat Steps 3 and 4 if any discoloration remains on the grout. Wipe a bleach pen across white grout and allow the gel to sit for a few minutes. Scrub again with the old toothbrush to remove the remaining stains.

    • 6). Rinse the grout with water and dry the tile and grout with clean cloths.
