How to Get Rid of Rust on Metal

    • 1). Soak smaller items in a bowl of vinegar. Keep the items (earrings, necklaces, etc.) in the vinegar for 10 minutes. Use an old towel to rub the vinegar off afterward; the rust should come off. If not, you may need to soak the item a few times.

    • 2). Rip off a sheet of aluminum foil and dip it in water. Use the aluminum foil to rub off the rust from larger areas.

    • 3). Combine baking soda with lemon juice and just enough water to create a paste when mixed. Apply the paste to the rusted metal and allow the solution to dry. Rub the solution off with steel wool.

    • 4). Use commercially available rust-remover solutions if all else fails. These solutions contain strong, toxic chemicals that will help erode the rust. Be sure to wear gloves and use only in a well-ventilated area.
