How to Build a Base for a Jetted Tub

    • 1). Measure the length and width of the tub from the farthest edge of the overhang. Measure the height of the tub from the floor to the outer edge overhang and add 1 inch. Record all measurements onto a writing pad for future cutting reference.

    • 2). Build a 2-by-4 frame to cover the sides of the tub. Some tubs are recessed in between three walls -- at both ends and at the rear -- so you will only need to build a frame for the front side. Otherwise, if you need to enclose the tube on all four sides, then build the frame in four sections: front, rear and both ends. Cut the lumber to correct height and length, assemble the frame by spacing vertical studs along floor and top plate 2-by-4s. Space the vertical studs 24 inches apart. Attach the studs to the floor and top plates with 3-inch wood screws.

    • 3). Place the stud framing around the tub, and attach the framing at the corners and at the floor with 3-inch wood screws. Your framing should extend slightly into the tub lip, or overhang, at the top. Check the framing with a level to ensure that the bottom is in line with the top where it slides behind the tub lip.

    • 4). Cover the framing with 1/2-inch bathroom board, placing the glossy finish out. Attach the board to the framing with a finish nailer, spacing the nails 12 inches apart. Trim out the corner of the sheathing with corner trim. Cut the trim to correct height, and attach it with a finish nailer, as well.
