- 1). Start your computer in Safe Mode. You can do this by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as your computer starts. Some malicious software disables key system operations; this startup procedure will remove the problem long enough for you to stop the software for good.
- 2). Run the Malicious Software Removal Tool, a Microsoft program already installed on computers running any operating system after Windows 98. To open it, just click the "Run" dialogue (in the desktop's Start menu). Type "MRT" (leave out quotation marks) when an input box pops up. Hit the ENTER key to open the tool. If you encounter problems, re-download the most recent version from Microsoft Support to begin the scan (link located in Resources).
- 3). Click once on the "Next" button.
- 4). Click once on the "Full Scan" selection. The "Full Scan" offers the best chance of detecting malicious software.
- 5). Click once on the Next button to start the Full Scan.
- 6). Follow the instructions onscreen to stop and remove any malicious software on your PC.
- 7). Click "Finish" when the repair is complete.
- 8). Restart your computer.
