How to Clean a Crystal Wine Decanter

    • 1). Protect the crystal by laying a towel or rubber mat at the bottom of the sink where you will be cleaning the decanter.

    • 2). Wash the outside of the decanter with warm water and dish detergent. A soft sponge will help get into the crevices if the decanter has etchings or an ornate or decorative surface.

    • 3). Wash the inside of the decanter with warm water and dish detergent. Shake the decanter to swish the detergent solution around, and then rinse with clean, warm water.

    • 4). If stains or wine rings remain, pour several tablespoons of rock salt and half a cup of vinegar and shake the mixture in the decanter. The rock salt will help dislodge the hardened stains and the vinegar will help dissolve the deposits. Let the salt and vinegar soak for a few hours if needed. Rinse with clean, warm water.

    • 5). If wine stains still remain, use a mixture of warm water, baking soda and rock salt. Swirl the mixture around to remove stubborn stains. Then rinse with clean, warm water.

    • 6). If stubborn stains still won't come off, pour some warm water and drop a denture-cleaning tablet inside the decanter. The water should effervesce and perform its cleaning magic. Let it stand overnight, and then rinse with clean, warm water.

    • 7). To dry the inside of the decanter, roll paper towel around the handle of a long wooden spoon and insert it inside the decanter, making sure at least two inches of the paper towel remain outside the bottle (otherwise it will be hard to pull it out of the decanter). Let the paper absorb all the moisture by leaving it inserted in the bottle overnight. Remove the paper towel and leave the decanter open for a few more hours to completely dry.
